Stellar Internship – Summer 2023

Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer

Location: Garner, IA

Description

• Programmed PIC microcontroller in C to identify and manipulate data received from a sensor. Designed an algorithm that used angular velocity and acceleration from sensor to identify angular displacement.

• Programmed a display screen using VT3 Tool software to display angular data from sensor.

Data from the TARS sensor is sent to the PIC microcontroller. The pitch rate from the sensor was sent to the VT3 display screen. Both the sensor and VT3 display use CAN protocol for communication. The VT3 display screen’s graphics and data inputs were programmed separately from the PIC using a software called ‘VT3 Tool’. We did not finish programming the VT3 diplsay due to a bug that prevented us from updating the software. We contacted the manufacturer, but they did not respond before I completed my internship.

• Built and installed wire harnesses for an HPS (hydrualic power system) test cart. Measured different electrical properties of the test cart while running various pressures and duty cycles on the hydrualic motors.

• Built 3D model of a demonstrational truck with a crane that could rotate, incline, and boom with a functional hook. The electronics used an Arduino and a Bluetooth PS4 controller was used for operation.

Stellar Mini Model: The “piston side” image shows two linear actuators that push two syringes inside the truck body. The syringes are connected to tubes that connect to the tips of other syringes that extend or boom the crane arm. The “control side” houses an Arduino that connects to a USB host shield and a bluetooth dongle. The dongle connects to a PS4 controller for operation. The servo in the far left of the “Control Side” image rotates the crane arm. GPIO pins on the Arduino control relays that control the servo and linear actuators. Voltage regulators are used to step down the voltage of the battery for the Arduino and servo.
